Kansas basketball coach Bill Self is one victory shy of a large milestone in his career as his No. 3-ranked Jayhawks (7-1) play host to UMKC. A KU victory over the Kangaroos (6-3) would give Self his 600th college victory.
Beyond Bill Self's potential 600th career victory, what will everybody be watching for tonight? I think free throws is the easy answer, so I'll go with perimeter defense. The Jayhawks have some great perimeter defenders (Mason, Graham, Vick and Jackson), so I'm curious to how well they can defend deep shots against the 'Roos, who are not afraid to throw up threes like the Golden State Warriors.
I can, indeed, confirm that Frank Mason doesn't have the same hairstyle that he wore to yesterday's press conference.
UMKC starters, as expected: Dashawn King, Isaiah Ross, Kyle Stewart, LaVell Boyd and Darnell Tillman. It's second-leading scorer, Martez Harrison, is still suspended indefinitely.
In the I've never seen that before department: Frank Mason just swatted a walk-on's shot in the layup line. Hilarious.
Pre-game starting lineup introductions underway.
KU with the home greys today
Frank Mason is usually loose before games, but he's really loose today. Making teammates crack up repeatedly.
Josh Jackson starts the scoring. Offensive rebound and putback following a spinning layup attempt in transition by Mason.
Then Udoka swats a shot into the crowd.
Lagerald Vick knocks down a 3. KU up 5-0 before UMKC takes a shot.
Vick crashes the offensive glass to push the ball to Jackson. Ends up with a Mason 3. KU aggressive to start.
Mason steal for a layup. Timeout UMKC.
Devonte Graham drills a 3 from the wing. KU locked in on both sides of the court.
KU with a full-court press on dead balls to start.
UMKC is 3-for-3 from deep. That'll keep the score close for a while.
