With the end of the regular season and a possible No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament not too far ahead of them, the Kansas Jayhawks look to improve upon their stellar 6-1 road record Saturday, when they visit Texas Tech. No. 3 KU (21-3 overall, 9-2 Big 12) leads the conference in scoring (80.8 points) in league games, while Tech (16-8, 4-7) ranks last (67.1).
Any thoughts on the selection committee's top 16 teams? Kansas was where I expected, but didn't expect Baylor to be seeded ahead of Gonzaga. Surprised to see no Big 10 teams listed.
If the season ended today, the top 4 seeds in the KC regional: 1. KU, 2. Florida State, 3. Arizona, 4. Duke.
Top-16 seeds by conference: ACC - 5 (Louisville, Duke, Florida State, Virginia, UNC); Big 12 - 3 (KU, Baylor, West Virginia); Pac 12 - 3 (UCLA, Arizona, Oregon); Big East - 2 (Villanova, Butler); SEC - 2 (Kentucky, Florida); WCC - 1 (Gonzaga).
Who's the player that everybody will be watching today? I'll pick Lagerald Vick off of the bench. He's played well in the past two games, both shooting and rebounding, and seems ready for a breakout performance. Devonte Graham scored 20 points in the first matchup against Texas Tech, so he should receive some extra defensive attention.
Texas Tech starters: Justin Gray, Niem Stevenson, Keenan Evans, Zach Smith and Anthony Livingston.
Bill Self on pregame radio: We're really honest with our guys and tell them what's going on. They are 4-7 in the league but have three one-possession losses. Even if they balance out, the worst you're looking at is 6-5 in the league. They are better than their record.
Self on TTU: (Evans) is a good guard. Our league is full of good guards and he's one of them. We look at them as good players. We're going to get everyone's best shot.
Self says rebounding and first-shot defense are keys tonight. "Hopefully we can pressure them a little bit."
For those interested, Kansas is a 4.5-point favorite today. Over/under set at 143.5
